The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, currently a Union Territory is the major dispute between India and Pakistan. Over the last three decades, the people in the region have witnessed egregious violations of human rights and civil liberties.

On August 5, 2019, the right-wing BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi unilaterally rescinded Kashmir's semi-autonomous status by revoking Article 370 and Article 35 A of the Indian constitution. Since then, the local administration has clamped down on critics, dissenters and put hundreds in jails.

Fears are running high among locals that the ruling dispensation under the grab of development is implementing its settler-colonial project which is going beyond the Muslim majority Kashmir valley province and into the Hindu-majority Jammu province.
